It’s now been 25 years that letter carriers have put in extra weekend hours to pickup load after load of extra food left by residents for the local food shelf.
Mid-afternoon on Saturday, current and retired postal carriers loaded truckloads of food gathered for the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive and drove it to McLeod Emergency Food Shelf. By the end of the day 1,775 pounds of food was gathered.
“There has been a lot of food picked up over the years,” said Barry Anderson, who took a break from retirement to help out.
Picking up food from all over town, and dropping it off, is about a six to seven hour process. And sometimes residents who see what’s going on, or who miss their postal worker, will drop off food at the post office after.
