Students from Mighty Dragons Preschool in Litchfield became sidewalk artists last week, all in celebration of the Week of the Young Child.

This is the 50th anniversary of the Week of the Young Child, which is observed annually in April. Julie Dengerud, owner and teacher at Little Dragons Preschool, said she usually tries to team up with other preschool programs in town on activities during the week. However, due to COVID-19 precautions this year, that wasn’t possible.

So Dengerud decided to find activities for her students. She used themes developed by the National Association for Education of Young Children — Music Monday, Tasty Tuesday, Work Together Wednesday, Artsy Thursday and Family Friday — and developed her own activities around them.

Looking for an outdoor activity for her students, Dengerud decided that Artsy Thursday, was the perfect time to bring both her morning and afternoon classes up to Sibley Avenue to showcase their chalk art skills. The students created a variety of masterpieces — from semi-trucks to flowers — on the west side of the 200 block of North Sibley Avenue.
