Litchfield High School Principal Jason Michels wants to end open lunch for juniors.

The practice allows juniors to leave campus for 53 minutes during their flex period. There have been no major behavioral problems tied to the practice. The proposed change is because of a concern for safety of students, staff and the district, Michels said. He said the district shouldn't look at the past because the situation may change.

Concerns were raised about the open period giving students a chance to use e-cigarettes, which have become more popular. It was pointed out that changes could still allow students access to extracurricular activities and academic support.

The conversation will continue at a future meeting.
