Sept. 22, 2018

Andrew George Nothnagel Jr., formerly of Litchfield, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2018, in Mesa, Arizona, with his family at his side. He was 82 years old.

Andy was born to Rose and Andrew Nothnagel Sr. on June 22, 1936, in Fair Haven Township, Minnesota. He grew up on farms in Fair Haven and Litchfield, and attended country school in Stearns County. As a teen, Andy left school to help on the family farm and earned a high school equivalency diploma from Litchfield High School. From there, he began a 20-year career at Litchfield Machine Works, where he was a welder and later a foreman. In 1974 he and his wife, Shirley, started Nothnagel Sales, a used and classic car business in Grove City. They moved Nothnagel Sales to Litchfield in 1976, and Andy continued the business there until 1992, when he moved to Arizona.

Andy had many interests, including restoring antique automobiles, racing cars, riding motorcycles and competing in vintage tractor pulls. As young men, he and his brother Lee raced cars together at the Atwater Speedway. Later, he restored a 1929 Essex that took second place in a national antique automobile show. He was a longtime member of the Antique Automobile Club of America and served as a board member and president of the Little Crow Chapter of the Club. In Arizona, Andy was a member of the Arizona Early Day Gas Engine & Tractor Association. He was also a volunteer firefighter for the Litchfield Fire Department for more than 20 years.

Andy married Shirley Gunnerson in 1958, and they had two daughters, Becky and Jody. They later divorced, and in 1992 Andy married Karen Clovis in Arizona. She preceded him in death in 2006. He was married to Margery Dollery from 2007 to 2012.

Andy is survived by his daughters, Becky (Brad) Schol, of Colorado, and Jody Nothnagel, of Arizona; as well as two granddaughters, Andie and Rylie Downs, of Arizona; a grandson, Jackson Schol, of Colorado; and two step-granddaughters, Erin and Lisa Schol, of Colorado. He is also survived by his siblings, Eugene (Jan) Nothnagel, of California; Shirley Nothnagel, Elaine Sunsdahl and Audre Nothnagel, all of Minnesota, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Andy was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew Sr. and Rose Nothnagel; his wife, Karen; and his brothers, Leroy and Lester.

A memorial service in celebration of Andy’s life will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 2, 2018, at St. Philip’s Catholic Church in Litchfield. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. The interment of ashes will be in St. Philip’s Calvary Cemetery, followed by lunch at St. Philip’s Catholic Church.
