Larry Michael Smith, 72, of Hutchinson passed away Friday, May 3, at Harmony River Living Center in Hutchinson. Mass of Christian Burial was Friday, May 10, at St. Anastasia Catholic Church in Hutchinson with interment in the church cemetery. Officiating was the Rev. Paul Wolf. Organist was Bev Wangerin. Song leader was Bobbi Ludewig and Barb Peterson. Musical selections were “Amazing Grace,” “Psalm 23,” “Be Not Afraid,” “Table Of Plenty,” “On Eagle’s Wings,” “Song Of Farewell” and “Lead Me, Lord.” Honorary urn bearers were Elks Lodge 2427 PERs. Urn bearers were Hayden Smith and Howie Smith. Military honors provided by Hutchinson Memorial Rifle Squad.

Larry Michael Smith was born July 7, 1946, in Willmar. He was the son of Luvern and Alice (Anderson) Smith. Larry was baptized as an infant and confirmed in his faith as a youth. He received his education in Willmar, graduating with the Willmar High School Class of 1964.

On Feb. 10, 1968, Larry was united in marriage to Jacquelyn Malecek at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Willmar. This marriage was blessed with five children, Christopher, Andrew, Matthew, Jason and Vern. Larry and Jackie lived in Willmar before making their home in Hutchinson in 1974. They shared 51 years of marriage.

Larry enlisted in active duty service in the United States Air Force Jan. 7, 1966, in Minneapolis. He served in England during the Vietnam War as a jet air craft mechanic. Larry was honorably discharged at the rank of staff sergeant Dec. 10, 1969, at McGuire Air Force Base in Burlington County, New Jersey.

Larry was employed as a parts manager at the Ford dealership in Hutchinson for 34 years before retiring in 2008. He was a member of the American Legion Post 96 and life member of the Elks in Hutchinson, where he was a past exalted ruler.

Larry enjoyed playing bingo with his bingo buddies. He also enjoyed playing games on the computer, going to the casino and watching television. He cherished his time spent with his grandchildren, family and friends.

Larry is survived by his wife Jackie Smith of Hutchinson; sons, Andrew Smith of Shakopee, Matthew Smith and his wife Erika of Hutchinson, Jason Smith of Hutchinson and Vern Smith and his wife Kathryn of Big Lake; grandchildren, Avery, Hayden, Howie, Hudson, Hattie, Lily, Anastasia and Gideon; sister Linda Leopold and her husband Tim of Galesville, Wisconsin; brothers-in-law, Robert Minzel, Ed Malecek and his wife Martha, Ted Malecek and his wife Margie, Dave Malecek and his special friend Laureen, Michael Malecek, Steve Malecek and his wife Hisae, and Jon Malecek and his wife Patty; sisters-in-law, Mary Spears and her husband Alan, Jean Hayes and her husband Don, and Terry Foss and her husband Daryl; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents Luvern and Alice Smith; son Christopher Smith; brother Doug Smith; sister Mary Minzel; sister-in-law Patricia Malecek-Rademacher; and parents-in-law Ed and Louise Malecek.
