Marie M. Richards, 98, of Stewart passed away Friday, May 31, at her home in Stewart with her loving family at her side. Mass of Christian Burial was Wednesday, June 5, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Stewart. Interment will be at a later date in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. Visitation was Wednesday, June 5, at the church. Officiating was the Rev. Paul Wolf. Organist was Bev Wangerin. Song leader was Bobbie Ludewig. Lectors were Tom Maiers and Stephanie McNeil. Eulogy and reflections by Sue and Terry Robinson. Presentation of gifts by Marie’s granddaughters, Stephanie McNeil, Gail Turner, Kim Lewis, Erica Knach, Chelsea Yakamavich and Sarah Yoost. Casket bearers were Adam Leistico, Matthew Yoost, Christopher Richards, Brian Knach, Chuck Kalenberg and Randy Kalenberg. Honorary casket bearers were Marie’s grandsons, James Klingerman, Andrew Ries, Paul Robinson, Mark Robinson and St. Boniface Catholic Parish—Christian Mothers.
Marie was born Oct. 21, 1920, in Stewart to John and Anne (Geschwind) Kalenberg. Marie was a lifelong resident of Stewart. On May 1, 1943, Marie was united in marriage to Stanley Dick Richards at the Catholic church in Lincoln, Nebraska, while stationed with the Air Force. Marie and Dick lived in Stewart all of their lives and shared more than 60 years of marriage before Dick passed away April 12, 2004. Their union was blessed with five children, Sharon, Janice, Susan, Bob and Kay.
Marie’s greatest love was her family. She especially loved caring for and nurturing everyone in her life including her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, as well as her friends and neighbors.
Marie was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Stewart. She graduated valedictorian of her class from Stewart Public High School. She was commissioned as a World War II motorenes and served as a driver in the motor pool. She served from 1942-44 and returned home in 1945. Marie was a woman of faith and enjoyed being active in St. Boniface Catholic Parish. She was a member of Christian Mothers and taught catechism for many years. She also enjoyed dancing, reading, gardening and playing cards. Of all of her jobs, Marie loved her work as a nursing assistant serving the people residing at Buffalo Lake Nursing Home the most.
A wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend, she will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her. Blessed be her memory.
Cherishing her memory are her five children, Sharon (Dave) Klingerman of Eden Prairie, Janice Ries of Eugene, Oregon, Susan (Terry) Robinson of White Bear Lake, Bob Richards of Maple Lake and Kay (Dave) Yoost of Chanhassen; grandchildren, James (Deb) Klingerman of Great Falls, Montana, Kim (Thompson) Lewis of Shakopee, Stephanie (Ed) McNeil of Eugene, Oregon, Gail (Dave) Turner of Portland, Oregon, Andrew (Elizabeth) Ries of San Francisco, California, Adam (Vicki) Leistico, St Paul, Erica (Brian) Knach, Minneapolis, Paul (Megan) Robinson, Southington, Connecticut, Mark (Mana) Robinson, Leesburg, Georgia, Chelsea (Bill) Yakamavich, Colorado Springs, Colorado, Christopher Richards, Vienna, Austria and Matthew and Sarah Yoost, Chanhassen; great-grandchildren, Jakob (Brooke) Schmidt, Nikolaus Schmidt, Anne McNeil of Eugene, Oregon, Megan, Riley and Katelyn Turner of Portland, Oregon, Madeline, Jack and Harrison of San Francisco, California, Zoe and Otto Leistico of St. Paul, Ryleigh Robinson of Southington, Connecticut and Marshall and Malaika Kasango-Robinson of Leesburg, Georgia; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother; husband Dick Richards; sister Adelene Kuehn; four brothers, Steven, Charles, the Rev. John and Herb Kalenberg; and son-in-law Dave Klingerman.
