William T. Olson, Jr. (a/k/a Bill, Ole, dad, grandpa, and great-grandpa), 91, passed away Friday, May 24, at Dassel Lakeside Nursing Home. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 29, at Litchfield United Methodist Church. Afterwards, a private family gathering will convene at one of Bill and Mary's "favorite spots" on Little Birch Lake, Melrose.
Bill, son of William (Tip) and Myrtle Olson was born in Minneapolis July 8, 1928. On March 15, 1947, Bill was united in marriage to Mary A. Wood.
For five years, 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, Bill and Mary operated and lived behind a small grocery store in Excelsior. They then moved to Wayzata, where Bill worked in sporting goods for 25 years at Corry's, Donaldson's, Dayton's and Red Owl.
In 1976, Bill and Mary bought and operated the Gambles Hardware Store on Sibley Avenue in Litchfield. Also, Bill became very active in Litchfield United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents and sister Betty, Bill was preceded in death by Mary, his beloved wife of 66 years.
He is survived by his children, Linda Wheeler of Laurel, Montana, James (Nancy) Olson of Shoreview, Ben (Stephanie) Olson of Owatonna and Nick Olson of Ohio; eight grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Litchfield United Methodist Church or to Anderson Gardens in Litchfield, where Bill and Mary share a bench that overlooks Lake Ripley.
